PHSU145 - Inotropic Therapy
This interactive online course focuses on general IV therapy concepts. In addition, extra information is added for providing infusion therapy for the home infusion and pediatric patient. The course is designed to provide practical information and tools for the hands-on clinical nurse. Topics include:
- Heart failure
- Inotropic therapy
- Inotropic administration general guidelines
- Milrinone administration
- Caring for a Milrinone patient
- Care of the central venous access device (CVAD)
- Patient and caregiver education
1.5 contact hours will be awarded to online class participants.
Criteria for successful completion to receive 1.5 contact hours
- Completion of all course modules
- Achieving a passing score of 85% on post-test
- Completion and submission of an evaluation form

Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to
- Identify the primary physiologic impact of positive inotropic medications.
- Discuss common side effects of inotropic therapy.
- Discuss the need for patient assessment parameters and give four examples of parameters.
- Describe vascular access device considerations for inotropic therapy, including catheter type and flushing protocols.
- Identify the three critical points to teach the caregiver for managing a milrinone patient in the home setting.
